Blog for Fort Santiago
Fort Santiago referred to as “The Walled City.” It is the oldest district and core of Manila. It was the seat of the government during the Spanish colonial period. The name Fort Santiago in Latin literally means “within the walls.” It was a large Malayan-Islamic resettlement named Maynilad (ruled by Raja Matanda, LakanDula ang Raja Sulayman). It was served as a prison for Philippines National Hero Jose Rizal before his execution in 1896.
Fort
Santiago is located at Santa Clara Intramuros, Manila along Manila Bay and
South of the Pasig River. It is open every day, from 8 in the morning until 6
in the afternoon. The
activities that we can do are a two-wheel battery-operated chariot, which is a
service offered by White Knight Hotel Intramuros and it makes an idea spot for
family picnics and other open air activities. The foot-steps of Jose Rizal that
signifies that he walked in the rough and dusty ground of Fort Santiago and the
historical cannons, ammunition, soldier’s quarters, a canal and other
historical memorabilia.
It
won’t be easy for us to forget this kind of historical place. Seeing those
attractions is really a breath-taking. Fort Santiago is where Dr. Jose Rizal
imprisoned and punished him during the Spanish Colonization.
